WHERE I COME FROM
I was born in 1966 to my mom, Judy Stried Van Dien and father, John K. Van Dien the First. My father was a 30-year veteran master sergeant for the North Chicago Police Department, serving under my grandfather, who served as the Assistant Chief of North Chicago. I met my wife, Kathleen, in 2001, and we had our daughter, Madisyn, in 2003.
A THRIVING CAREER
I started my career in law enforcement in 1986, working as a guard in the Lake County Jail. I served in that capacity for two years under former Sheriff Robert H. "Mickey" Babcox before taking the deputy test and became a grade one deputy. I was shortly transferred from the jail to serve in court security, then was transferred to civil process. I was later transferred to traffic, the county warrants division, and later to highway patrol.
WHY I WANT TO BE SHERIFF
Lake County is always where I've wanted to live, work, and raise a family. I take pride and enjoy serving the people of Lake County as a law enforcement officer.
Being the sheriff of Lake County has always been my calling. From my Grandfather to my father and their work in law enforcement, then my Uncle Chuck Fagan serving the county as Undersheriff, this is something I've always felt was my responsibility. I am the best candidate for sheriff because I've grown through and performed the jobs inside the sheriff's department. I've been a member of the rank and file, I've performed the jobs of the officers out on that street.
My leadership pledge to residents:
I, John K. Van Dien, promise the following:
As sheriff, I will push to consistently protect the public by upholding the constitution of the United States and the state of Illinois; I will push to effectively and indiscriminately enforce the law throughout Lake County; I will continue to render assistance to the public whenever necessary through whatever means at our disposal; I will push to provide assistance to our law enforcement partners in order to reduce crime and make us safe; I will push my department to respond to all requests for police services throughout Lake County in the absolute most professional manner possible.
